  • Braves' Reynaldo Lopez: Lasts just 4.2 innings

    Rotowire

Lopez (2-2) took the loss Saturday in Pittsburgh, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk over just 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

It's the right-hander's shortest outing of the season and also the fewest pitches (70) he's thrown in a start this year. Lopez did labor a bit in the third and fourth frames, and Atlanta manager Brian Snitker elected to pull his starter after he yielded a two-out single in the fifth. The righty hasn't won a game since April 16 even as he still holds a 2.43 ERA over that stretch.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Sitting down Saturday

    Rotowire

D'Arnaud isn't in Atlanta's lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh.

After going 2-for-4 with two RBI during Friday's loss, d'Arnaud will take a seat Saturday while Chadwick Tromp starts behind the plate, batting eighth.

  • Braves' Austin Riley: Sitting as expected

    Rotowire

Riley (side) isn't in Atlanta's lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.

Manager Brian Snitker said Friday that Riley is likely to sit out until Atlanta begins its series against the Nationals on Monday, so the third baseman's absence Saturday isn't too surprising. Zack Short will continue starting at third base while Riley misses his 12th consecutive game.

  • Braves' Jimmy Herget: Recalled from Triple-A

    Rotowire

Atlanta recalled Herget from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.

Herget was acquired from the Angels on May 2, and he has since allowed three earned runs across seven innings with Gwinnett. He will now come up to give Atlanta a fresh bullpen arm, replacing Darius Vines, who was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Braves' Darius Vines: Sent back to Gwinnett

    Rotowire

Atlanta optioned Vines to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Vines was recalled from Triple-A on Monday to give Atlanta additional bullpen depth, and he will now head back to the minors after allowing six earned runs in three innings during Friday's loss to the Pirates. The 26-year-old righty owns a 7.82 ERA through 12.2 big-league innings but could still provide depth for the big-league staff later in the year.

  • Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Diagnosed with Grade 2 strain

    Rotowire

Smith-Shawver was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain Friday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Smith-Shawver was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Friday, though a Grade 2 strain likely means a six-to-eight-week recovery timeline. The 21-year-old righty was called up Thursday to make a spot start against the Cubs, and Atlanta's pitching needs will likely dictate whether he remains in Atlanta or heads to Triple-A Gwinnett once he returns from the IL -- likely sometime in July.

  • Braves' Austin Riley: Likely to return Monday

    Rotowire

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker noted Friday that Riley (side) is likely to remain out until Monday's series opener against the Nationals, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Riley has been sidelined due to a left intercostal strain he sustained May 12 against the Mets. Despite the length of his absence, Atlanta did not place the 27-year-old third baseman on the 10-day IL in hopes he could return sooner, but Riley appears on track to rejoin the lineup following a weekend series against the Pirates. Prior to his injury, Riley was slashing .245/.319/.388 with eight doubles, three home runs and 18 RBI over 163 plate appearances.

  • Braves' Jarred Kelenic: Idle against lefty

    Rotowire

Kelenic is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The lefty-hitting Kelenic won't face southpaw Bailey Falter on Friday. Instead, Adam Duvall will start in left field and bat eighth.

  • Braves' Austin Riley: Still not starting

    Rotowire

Riley (side) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Riley will miss an 11th consecutive start Friday with a left intercostal strain. Despite the lengthy absence, it seems Riley is close to returning after swinging a bat Tuesday. Zack Short will start at third and bat ninth Friday.

  • Braves' Luke Williams: Sent to Triple-A

    Rotowire

Atlanta optioned Williams to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

The 27-year-old had his contract selected by Atlanta in mid-April, but he tallied just four plate appearances during his month with the big club. Joey Wendle was signed to a major-league contract Friday and is taking Williams' place on the roster.

  • Braves' Joey Wendle: Gets MLB deal from Atlanta

    Rotowire

Atlanta signed Wendle to a one-year contract Friday.

Wendle was released by the Mets earlier this week after slashing just .222/.243/.250 in 37 plate appearances, but he has quickly caught on with their division rivals. The utility infielder made the All-Star team with the Rays in 2021 but has produced just a .604 OPS in three seasons since then. Wendle will provide depth all over the infield in Atlanta.

  • Braves' Ray Kerr: Promoted, starting Friday

    Rotowire

Atlanta recalled Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday's game at Pittsburgh.

The left-hander was optioned to Gwinnett following Monday's twin bill against the Padres but will be allowed to quickly rejoin the big club as AJ Smith-Shawver (oblique) lands on the injured list. Kerr's four appearances for Atlanta this season have all come out of the bullpen, but he's pitched well with a 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:0 K:BB across 9.1 innings. He threw 64 pitches over 3.1 frames in his last outing and figures to face some workload limitations since that was his longest outing of the campaign. Kerr could piggyback with Darius Vines, who was called up Monday but has yet to appear in a game for Atlanta.

  • Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Lands on IL with oblique strain

    Rotowire

Atlanta placed Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list Friday with a strained left oblique.

Smith-Shawver struck out four over 4.1 scoreless innings in a spot start versus the Cubs on Thursday but evidently suffered an oblique injury in the process. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but oblique strains generally require longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Smith-Shawver might head back to Triple-A Gwinnett once he's healthy, though it could depend on Atlanta's rotation needs at the time.

  • Braves' Sean Murphy: Goes yard again on rehab stint

    Rotowire

Murphy (oblique) went 2-for-6 with a double, a home run and two RBI for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

The rehabbing catcher got the start at designated hitter and launched a solo shot off Valente Bellozo in the fourth inning, Murphy's second home run in two games for Gwinnett. Atlanta may want to make sure he's ready for regular defensive duties before activating him from the IL, but based on how he's looked at the plate, the 29-year-old should be back with the major-league team at some point this weekend.

  • Braves' Dylan Lee: Nabs first win

    Rotowire

Lee (1-1) picked up the win Thursday over the Cubs, striking out one in a scoreless inning of relief.

AJ Smith-Shawver got the start but lasted only 4.1 innings before handing the ball off to Lee in the fifth inning to continue what proved to be a combined shutout for Atlanta. Lee has been impressive in a low-leverage role this season, posting a 1.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings, but he has just one win and two holds in 14 appearances.
