These DIY Baking Soda Air Fresheners are super easy to make using common kitchen ingredients. They are just what you need if you suffer from allergies or you’re trying to avoid the chemicals and synthetics in commercial air fresheners! Aren’t they cute?
I am not going to make any false claims here. These Baking Soda Air Fresheners smell NOTHING like store bought air fresheners, but do you know why?
They’re all natural!
Commercial air-fresheners are filled with toxic chemicals that can lead to a vast array of health issues especially for those who suffer from allergies. Besides that they never seem to actually get rid of odors. Instead odors are masked by an overpowering synthetic sweet smell which I personally find nauseating.
Pretty meets functional
Last summer we renovated the bathrooms in our home. After the renovations were complete I began the search for pretty accessories to complement each bathroom.I searched many home shops for a ‘natural’ lavender air freshener but came up blank.

Eventually I gave up.
It wasn’t until one day when I went to replace the jar of baking soda that I keep in my fridge as a deodorizer that it occurred to me that this easy, natural solution could also work in rooms. By neutralizing acids and bases, baking soda just seems to magically suck up odors.
The only problem was that a plain jar of baking soda wasn’t gonna cut it in my new ‘fancy’ bathroom so I got to work with some burlap and pretty ribbon .
Here’s how you can make those cute little DIY Air Fresheners for your home too.

You will need:
- A glass jar (sterilized food jars or mason jars)

Add a couple drops of essential oil to the underside of the fabric to help intensify the smell.
What is the best way to make your house smell good?
The smell from these homemade air fresheners will never be as strong as commercial scented plug-ins but the room is left smelling fresh and odor free!
If you would like a more intense smell I highly recommend an Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser . All you need to do is add a couple drops of your favourite essential oils or blends to your diffuser and the room will be filled with a scent of your choice.
