Queenie's Dionne Brown reveals what it was like wearing bunny costume (2024)

Queenie star Dionne Brown has revealed what it was like wearing the same bunny costume as whatRenee Zellweger wore in Bridget Jones Diary.

The Channel 4 series, which hit screens on Tuesday, has been dubbed the 'Black Bridget Jones' for its tale about a young black woman navigating her career, identity and love life.

The eight-part series is an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams's bestselling novel about the 25-year-old south Londoner.

And as the actress stepped into Renee's wardrobe in one of the episodes, transforming into the iconic black bodysuit and bunny ears - she has recalled what it was really like stripping off for the series.

She toldCosmopolitan UK: 'The build up to that! I was like, "I would never wear this in public!" Everyone told me, "You look great!"

'I felt like I could see too much of my body, and it was going to be on camera forever, but when we got to it, it was just like, "Alright, fine".'

Speaking about her role, she added: 'It’s been good. It’s been fun. A lot has been asked of me, but it’s been such a privilege and a dream come true.

'I knew it was going to be a big, emotional task [taking on Queenie], and we did a lot in a very short space of time. Sometimes I found filming quite overstimulating.

'The emotional demands of the character were a lot; in hindsight I should have communicated when I was struggling to you and my agents.'

The series has impressed critics almost across the board - with a few exceptions - while viewers have been left waiting hungrily for the next episodes after the first two instalments premiered on Channel 4.

While the tale of Queenie was compared to Helen Fielding's 1996 novel Bridget Jones's Diary when it was first published in 2019, one critic has suggested that the TV adaptation of Carty-Williams's story (written by the author herself) is 'raunchier and more truthful' than its predecessor.

Across the board, Dionne is hailed for depicting a young black woman trying to find her way in the world as she navigates her British-Jamaican identity and experiences struggles in the workplace and her love life.

The supporting and ensemble cast are also praised by all critics, who hail moments of 'intimacy' between characters.

However, some critics found holes in the plot and narrative compared to Carty-Williams's award-winning book.

Sharing their opinions of the show on X/Twitter, viewers were similarly spellbound by the series - but a few agreed the pacing of the narrative felt 'flat' at times.

Many people watching Queenie said they could relate to the character as she spirals after breaking up with her white boyfriend, Tom, after a row with his family when his grandmother uses an offensive term to describe the children they might one day have.

She then discovers she has had a miscarriage.

The plot sees the protagonist going into freefall as she engages in short-term trysts with white men; one who leaves her with internal bruising from rough sex.

The gritty drama, which also contains lighter moments of comedy, left some viewers wanting to 'binge the rest of the season' after watching the first few episodes.

One person wrote: 'I feel so seen. This show is a bit of me.' Another said she was 'really enjoying' the show'.

However, some accused the TV adaptation of falling 'flat', despite the fact they had read the 2019 book and 'loved it'.
