Betty, I won't make assumptions
About why you switched your homeroom
But I think it's 'cause of me
Betty, one time I was riding on my skateboard
When I passed your house
It's like I couldn't breathe
You heard the rumors from Inez
You can't believe a word she says
Most times, but this time it was true
The worst thing that I ever did
Was what I did to you
But if I just showed up at your party
Would you have me?
Would you want me?
Would you tell me to go f*ck myself
Or lead me to the garden?
In the garden would you trust me
If I told you it was just a summer thing?
I'm only seventeen
I don't know anything but I know I miss you
Betty, I know where it all went wrong
Your favorite song was playing
From the far side of the gym
I was nowhere to be found
I hate the crowds, you know that
Plus, I saw you dance with him
You heard the rumors from Inez
You can't believe a word she says
Most times, but this time it was true
The worst thing that I ever did
Was what I did to you
But if I just showed up at your party
Would you have me?
Would you want me?
Would you tell me to go f*ck myself
Or lead me to the garden?
In the garden would you trust me
If I told you it was just a summer thing?
I'm only seventeen
I don't know anything but I know I miss you
I was walking home on broken cobblestones
Just thinking of you when she pulled up
Like a figment of my worst intentions
She said "James, get in, let's drive"
Those days turned into nights
Slept next to her but
I dreamt of you all summer long
Betty, I'm here on your doorstep
And I planned it out for weeks now but
It's finally sinking in
Betty, right now is the last time
I can dream about what happens when you see my face again
The only thing I wanna do
Is make it up to you
So, I showed up at your party
Yeah, I showed up at your party
Yeah, I showed up at your party
Will you have me?
Will you love me?
Will you kiss me on the porch
In front of all your stupid friends?
If you kiss me
Will it be just like I dreamed it?
Will it patch your broken wings?
I'm only seventeen
I don't know anything
But I know I miss you
Standing in your cardigan
Kissing in my car again
Stopped at a streetlight, you know I miss you

“betty” is from the perspective of “James” who is explaining to “betty” rumor she might have heard from “Inez”. This is an apology from an unfaithful 17-year-old boy to the young girl who is his high school childlike. Swift uses her country roots and her southern accent rings true throughout the song. This is the first song in a while that has a twang and rustic guitar. This is a song that people can sing along to and is a highlight to her older musical style.

Inez and James are the names of Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds daughters, who Taylor is very close with. You can also hear Inez or James speak on the track Gorgeous ....some say the song Betty is named after the couples 3rd daughter who no knows the name of yet.

The fourteenth track of Taylor's new album 'Folklore' was written by Taylor Swift & William Bowery. Produced by Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, and Taylor Swift. It was recorded by Laura Sisk at the Kitty Committee Studio (Los Angeles, CA), Jack Antonoff at Rough Customer Studio (Brooklyn, NY). Mixed by Serban Ghenea at Mixstar Studios (Virginia Beach, VA). Mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound (New York, NY). The track was released on July 24, 2020.
What the artist meansOn ‘betty’, Taylor stunts on the whole pop scene. It's a pop song with a folk beat and she's narrating a story about a girl named Betty. She's addressing rumors and singing from the perspective of a dude here and she's (he's) apologizing for believing those unfounded rumors. This is a nostalgic tune and she's singing about missing the lover on this nicely produced track reminiscing the good times before the rumors came and ruined the beautiful thing they once had. The hook here is essential and Taylor actually owned the whole tune. She's waxing nostalgic and I can hear a hint of melancholy on this one too. Did she just say a figment of her worst intentions, o my gosh her pen game is such a shining light on this song and also the whole album? This is top tier pop folk. The only thing I want to do, is make it up to you.
What the song means to meThe song is a proper listen and sees Taylor deliver one of her softest melodies in years. She's singing like an unhinged child just looking for love and it's so refreshing hearing her this way after years and years of witnessing her change and mature in the industry. Here she vows not to make assumptions and this strikes a chord with me as rumors and assumptions have ruined one too many a beautiful relationship I once had. I will give this song a rating of 9/10.
