In the mid-1990s, the cinematic world was hugely successful. The industry was thriving with Hollywood producing record-breaking blockbusters like James Cameron's Titanic and indie flicks regularly hitting cult status like Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Across the pond in the United Kingdom, romantic comedies were the order of the day. The films of Richard Curtis, such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and, later, Notting Hill, set the standard in British cinema. However, the success of the crime genre in the United States had been noticed in Britain, with one man about to change British cinema forever. Crime movies had long been a part of the British film scene, but with the power of comedy too much to alter, the two would have to be combined.
After meeting Michael Vaughn, who had experience working in Los Angeles, an unknown director named Guy Ritchie would write and direct his first feature film with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. After finding the perfect balance between the gritty crime genre of the US and the witty comedic tongue of British movies of the time, the film was a raging success. After subsequent hits with Snatch and Revolver, Ritchie would become embedded within cinema's illustrious history.
Ritchie broke away from the crime genre and gave us King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the 2019 Aladdin live-action remake. He would return to British crime-comedy with The Gentlemen. The film made $115 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $22 million. The movie’s popularity and franchise potential are what led to the upcoming Netflix series. Does 'The Gentlemen' Series Have a Release Date?
The Gentlemen series will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, March 8, 2024. The series comes over four years after the release of the movie. The series will also be arriving one month before the theatrical release of Guy Ritchie's next film: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Is There a Trailer for 'The Gentlemen' Series?
A teaser trailer was released by Netflix on January 15, 2024. Set to the song "Time of the Season" by Zombies, the first look at the series showcases a combination of wealth and criminal activities intertwining, as well as the same brand of violence that Ritchie's original film showcased.
A full trailer for The Gentlemen series was released by Netflix on February 22, 2024.

Guy Ritchie originally pitched The Gentlemen as a television series but instead adapted it into the 2020 film. Now with the arrival of the Netflix series, things have seemed to come full circle for Ritchie.
The official plot synopsis for The Gentlemen reads:
THE GENTLEMEN sees Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherit his father’s sizeable country estate - only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire. Moreover, a host of unsavoury characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation. Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.

The confirmed cast list for The Gentlemen series includes Theo James (The White Lotus) as Eddie Halstead, Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as Susie Glass, Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck) as Lady Sabrina, Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) as Geoff Seacombe, Daniel Ings (The Crown) as Freddy Halstead, Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian) as Uncle Stan, Ray Winstone (The Departed) as Bobby Glass, Chanel Cresswell (This is England) as Tammy, Max Beesley (Hijack) as Henry Collins, Harry Goodwins (In His Hands: The Emergence) as Jack, Pearce Quigley (Detectorists) as Gospel John, Jasmine Blackborrow (Shadow and Bone) as Charly Horniman, and Ruby Sear as Gabrielle.
Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Dar Salim (The Covenant), and Michael Vu have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
When talking about the upcoming series, Ritchie spoke highly of the cast, proclaiming:
I’m thrilled that with Netflix, Miramax and Moonage, we have this opportunity to inhabit it once again. We’re looking forward to bringing fans back into that world, introducing new characters and their stories, and I’m excited to be doing it with this extremely talented cast.
It is currently unknown if any of the cast members from the original film, which included Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Hugh Grant, and Michelle Dockery, will be reprising their roles for the series.
Who Is Making 'The Gentlemen' Series?
Alongside creating the series, Guy Ritchie serves as an executive producer and writer, as well as directing the first two episodes. Ritchie co-wrote the series with Matthew Read (Peaky Blinders) who also serves as an executive producer. Also on board as executive producers are Marn Davies, Ivan Atkinson, and Marc Helwig from Miramax TV; and Will Gould and Frith Tiplader from Moonage Pictures. Hugh Warren (Hanna) serves as a producer. Serving as directors alongside Ritchie are David Caffrey (Peaky Blinders), Nima Nourizadeh (Project X), and Eran Creevy (Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts).

If you haven’t seen the film, The Gentlemen, which was released in theaters in January 2020, is what led to the upcoming spin-off series. Mickey Pearson is an American expatriate who became rich by building a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he's looking to cash out of the business, it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes -- including bribery and blackmail -- from shady characters who want to steal his domain. The film is currently not on any streaming service, but it is available for digital rental and purchase on most online video stores.
