Can you have alcohol at Whiskeytown Lake? ›

Whiskeytown Lake generally has very good water quality and a major reason for this is because all the water flowing into the lake comes from rural, mountainous, forested landscapes.

Whiskeytown was one of Shasta County's first gold mining settlements during the California Gold Rush of 1849, though at the time it was called Whiskey Creek Diggings.

Construction was finished on Whiskeytown Dam in 1963, submerging much of the original town under the reservoir and prompting the moving or demolition of many structures and even the Whiskeytown Cemetery. When water levels are low enough, the foundation of some original buildings is still visible.

Whiskeytown Lake: 264 feet

Its deepest point is near the dam, which plummets 264 feet to the bottom, Whiskeytown Superintendent Josh Hoines said. The top of an average 20-story building (250-260 feet) would vanish below its surface; the Taj Mahal would sit 24 feet below its surface.

Not only are the fish in these waters healthy, but they are big. There are currently 112 state records of fish (trout, catfish, salmon, tuna, sturgeon), crustaceans (crab and lobster) and mollusks (abalone).

Start from either location and the trail will take you by secluded coves and areas of the lakeshore where you can find the perfect place for a swim. Pets are not allowed on the beaches, however leashed pets are allowed on trails that provide lake access as well as on the lake shore at various pullouts around the lake.

Divers at Whiskeytown Lake have discovered a human leg that is believed to be from the body of Bridget Jacobs, the missing woman who may have been murdered by her ex-husband, the Shasta County Sheriff's Office reported Friday evening.

Why is Whiskeytown Lake so low? ›

Whiskeytown lake is drawn down by approximately 10 feet in the winter as a flood protection measure. Keeping the lake full provides excellent year round recreational opportunities and forms the heart of the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

Black bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and fox can all be found in the park along with numerous rodents, rabbits, and insectivores.

Alcohol is not permitted at Brandy Creek Beach, Oak Bottom Beach, East Beach, and the Whiskey Creek Group Day Use Area Beach. Elsewhere in the park, such as along the shoreline or in your campsite, please drink responsibly and never drink and drive or drink and boat.

Popular activities at Oak Bottom include swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. the marina. Jet skis and similar brands of personal watercraft are banned on Whiskeytown Lake.

Oak Bottom Campground is the only campground located on the shores of Whiskeytown Lake. The campground is operated by a concessioner and is open year-round.

The possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages (this includes alcohol poured into a different container) is prohibited in all day use areas. Alcohol is only allowed in your overnight camp site and you may also consume alcohol from a vessel. All traffic laws apply in the park as they are state roadways.

Alcohol. You may not possess or consume an alcoholic beverage in the park's day-use areas April 1 through Labor Day (unless the park manager has granted written authorization through an event permit).

In accordance with the provisions of Section 4326 of Title 14, California Code of Regulations, the consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited within all day use and lake surface areas of Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma.

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited from all park areas administered by Rock Creek Park, except Carter Barron Amphitheater, Rock Creek Park Golf Course Clubhouse, and Rock Creek Tennis Stadium. Do not attach ribbons, posters, balloons, or directional signs to any park object, either natural or man‐made.
